Recommendation Letter (potential)
A unique hands-on experience to train with professional researchers and entrepreneurs at a cutting-edge biotech company. Students will complete one of a kind projects and experience the full project lifecycle from research to commercialization.
Bio-Chemistry Research X Business Innovation
2. Applied Biochemistry Modules
Valorization
Efficacy Validation (example)
Conduct antioxidant testing using nematode models (Research on C. elegans has played a significant role in four Nobel Prizes)
Design experiments and quantify health benefits
Process Optimization
Engage world-leading analysis, isolation & extraction technologies for active ingredients to enhance yield and purity (>99%).
Sustainable Formulation
Develop functional prototypes, such as antioxidant raw materials and products.
Analyze bioactive components using advanced equipment like HPLC(- MS), and extractactive substances via supercritical extraction or chromatography.
3. Lab-to-Production Scaling
Cost Optimization: Production costs under optimized process conditions (e.g., microwave-assisted extraction, enzymatic conversion).
Pilot Production: Lab-scale -> Pilot-scale -> Batch production serving as the MVP (Minimum Viable Product) for the commercialization module.
Supply Chain Design: Plan raw material sourcing, production logistics, and distribution channels for bio-based products.
Regulatory Compliance: Understand safety and labelling requirements for consumer goods and sustainable materials.
Develop innovative thinking, opportunity scanning, and creative problem- solving for real-world solutions
Design business models (Lean Canvas, Value Proposition Canvas), assess market size (TAM/SAM/SOM), and define a unique competitive edge
Create sustainability strategy, build MVPs, and define brand identity
Plan startup financials, funding strategy, go-to-market, social media testing (e.g. TikTok), and investor pitching
4. Business Innovation Modules
Paris – Rice University
The program was a unique experience, not just seeing how advanced textbook knowledge gets applied in the real world, but also the tremendous amount of work involved in bringing an end product to the market from concept and lab research. This is something we don’t get to do in class or competitions. I also learnt a lot about processing natural ingredients and related regulations. Definitely worth the time.
Student Testimonials
Program Outcomes
Build a One Of A Kind portfolio-ready signature project with experience in full development cycle from concept to MVP
Demonstrate interdisciplinary excellence across biology, chemistry, sustainability, and entrepreneurship
Demonstrate advance hands on laboratory skills and experience
Definitely a cool experience. I chose a saffron research and intensive utilization project + commercialization. The wet lab work was challenging but fun and I learned everything from HPLC analysis and nematode bioassays to product design and safety testing. It showed me how biotech research can be lonely, but also incredibly rewarding when results come through. Creating a final beverage and business plan deepened my interest for biotech and entrepreneurship, and I just wish I could have made more time to dive deeper into the research.
